Tour de France. Five things to know about Nans Peters, winner at Lonvenvielle this Saturday

French AG2R La Mondiale rider Nans Peters, 26, won on the eighth stage of the Tour de France, the first in the Pyrenees, this Saturday after an impressive single-handed number. Here are five things to know about him.

1. A first name in homage to a soap opera

Born in Monestier-du-Percy, in Isère, Nans Peters is thus named in reference to the soap opera “Nans the Shepherd”, which was broadcast in the 1970s. His name comes from his paternal grandparents, originally from the Pays -Low.

2. A pure AG2R La Mondiale product

Between Peters and AG2R La Mondiale, the story has been going on for seven years. At 16, in 2010, the young Isérois joined Chambéry CC, where he was ranked best national junior in 2012. A performance that allowed him, one year later, to join Chambéry Cyclisme Formation, a training team associated with AG2R La Global.

3. A good roller in his youth

In his youth, Nans Peters was most distinguished by his riding skills. He finished third in the 2014 French Time Trial Championships in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais). He did it again in 2015 in Pieux, in La Manche, and also took third place in the French amateur road championships. This Saturday, it was his qualities as a climber that impressed during the first Pyrenean stage of the Tour de France.

4. He had already won a stage in the Tour of Italy in May 2019

A year ago, Nans Peters had already distinguished himself on a Grand Tour. It was during the 17th stage of the Giro between Commezzadura and Anterselva, in Italy, on May 29, 2019. Starting off in an eighteen breakaway, in medium mountains, the rider of the AG2R Mondiale attacked 16 kilometers from the he arrived then won solo. The Grenoblois arrived more than a minute and a half early. The Frenchman had also worn the white jersey for three days during this Giro.

5. In the process, he was affected by mononucleosis

In November 2019, a few months after his stage victory at the Giro, Nans Peters was struck down by mononucleosis, a viral illness causing severe fatigue and high fever. He had thus had to postpone his start to the season and had not started racing again until February 13, 2020, during the Tour de la Provence.
